Rebels down Libyan aircraft as world leaders discuss next move

Rebels downed a military aircraft on Monday as they fought a government bid to take back Libya's third city, Misrata, a witness said, while foreign ministers discussed how to help them oust Muammar Gaddafi.

Gaddafi's forces have been trying for days to push back a revolt that has won over large parts of the military, ended his control over eastern Libya and is holding the government at bay in western cities near the capital Tripoli.

Central Bank approves new loan rules

The UAE Central Bank announced on Sunday the approval of a new set of regulations with regard to bank loans and other services offered by the banks enabling individual customers to borrow up to 20 times their salary or monthly income.

"The value of the loan is tied-up to the borrower's income. The repayment period is set at 48 months, which is sufficient for repayment," the Central Bank said, adding the new regulations cover car loans, overdraft facilities and credit cards and require the banks to disclose the interest rates they charge on loans and facilities.

Gaddafi blames bin Laden for Libya bloodshed

Muammar Gadaffi blamed a revolt against his rule on al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden on Thursday and said that as Libyan leader he only had "moral authority".

Gaddafi, speaking by telephone to Libyan television, offered his condolences for those who were killed in the bloodshed and called for calm amongst people he said were fighting amongst themselves and taking hallucinogenic drugs. Saying bin Laden was "the real criminal", Gaddafi urged Libyans not be swayed by the al Qaeda leader.

Bahrain frees prisoners to mollify crowds of protesters

Bahrain has freed 23 people accused of trying to topple the island's Sunni Muslim monarchy, along with other prisoners and people detained in last week's protests, a Shi'ite opposition lawmaker said on Wednesday.

The prisoner release was a further concession to the mainly Shi'ite protesters who took to the streets last week to demand a constitutional monarchy and an elected government, emboldened by a surge of popular unrest across the Arab world.

Abu Dhabi to launch first satellite next month

Abu Dhabi’s YahSat will send two hybrid satellites into the orbit during the year, which will serve the military as well as civilian and commercial purposes. The first satellite Y1A is scheduled to be launched as early as end March, a top official said.

Al Yahsat Satellite Communications Company, or YahSat, which is part of Mubadala Development Company, an investment arm of the Abu Dhabi Government, announced its plans last year to launch two hybrid satellites designed to provide communication facilities to commercial and governmental users.
