Small amount of Japan radiation to reach Mideast

The Director General of the UAE's Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation (Fanr), Dr William D Travers, has issued the statement about the recent nuclear accidents in Japan caused by a natural catastrophe.

"We have been following the developments caused by the devastating earthquake in Japan with great interest and vigilance. We have sympathy for the Japanese people at this difficult time of incalculable loss of life and property. Our thoughts are also with those at the impacted nuclear power plants who are bravely struggling to protect public health and safety," it added.

UN Security Council approves no-fly zone in Libya

The UN Security Council has voted to impose a no-fly zone over Libya and authorise "all necessary measures" to protect civilians from attacks by Muammar Gaddafi's forces.

Federal National Council polls on Sept 24

Elections to the Federal National Council (FNC), the UAE’s parliament, will be held on September 24, the National Elections Commission (NEC) said on Wednesday.

At a meeting held under the chairmanship of Dr Anwar Mohammed Gargash, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs and FNC Affairs, the NEC passed details of the timeline for the election procedure, including registration of candidates, announcement of the preliminary list of candidates, filing of objection to the candidates’ application, the commission’s response, objections to the final list of candidates, deadline for withdrawal of candidates, deadline for submission of names of candidates’ agents, and campaigning period.

Emergency declared in Bahrain for 3 months

His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa of Bahrain on Tuesday enforced emergency law for three months in all parts of the Kingdom as two died in fresh violence.

The Act was declared in the wake of the major political unrest and sectarian tensions which Bahrain has been witnessing since February 14.

More than 10,000 feared dead in Japan quake, tsunami
